Hotels feature a range of guest rooms to satisfy people who are on vacation, business travel, or traveling for special events. Standard rooms, premium rooms, deluxe rooms, and suites appeal to single travelers and large groups. In addition, many hotels feature ADA guestrooms for people who need special accommodations.
ADA guest rooms are specially designed for people who may have mobility issues or disabilities. The bathroom area in ADA guest rooms is outfitted with a range of features to make bathing and getting dressed easier for guests. Here are ADA bathroom features to be aware of when renovating hotel guest rooms.
Shower Systems and Hand Showers with Risers/Slide Bars
People with mobility issues or who use a walker, wheelchair, or other mobility devices can find it difficult to stand to take a shower or bathe. The height of the showerhead doesn’t allow them to properly wash. ADA-compliant shower systems and hand showers come with risers and slide bars so that the showerhead can be adjusted to different heights. It can be lowered for people who bathe while seated. Guests can use the hand shower to massage muscles or wash their hair.
The Symmons Dia® Shower/Hand Shower System provides a riser bar to adjust the height of the spray and easy to use handles to control the water temperature.
Walk-In Tub Fixtures
Some guests may prefer baths to soothe aching joints. However, it can be difficult for some guests to lift their legs over the side of a standard tub. Walk-in tubs have doors that allow a person to walk into it and sit on a raised seat. The door securely closes and provides a water-tight seal. The tub’s fixtures are usually deck-mounted on the rim of the tub, making it easier to reach over and control the water temperature. You may also consider adding a hand shower on the side so a guest can further relax stiff muscles.
The walk-in tub may also feature grab bars in specific locations so that a person can lower onto the seat. The grab bar may be placed in a horizontal position or at a slightly slanted angle to make it easier to rise up out of the tub.
The Symmons Duro® Grab Bar provides a secure grip so a hotel guest can lower themselves onto the seat in the walk-in tub.
Fixtures for Roll-In Showers
Some hotel guests may use mobility devices such as wheelchairs and walkers may not be able to physically walk into a shower. A roll-in shower is wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. The shower floor smoothly leads from the stall to the rest of the bathroom, and the wheelchair tires don’t have to be lifted to go over any raised door threshold. The person can then be lifted onto the shower seat to wash, as the hand shower is low enough to be within reach.
The Symmons Shower Seat has padding so a person can sit comfortably. It can be lifted up to provide more space for other guests who want to wash up.
When remodeling hotel guest rooms to accommodate the elderly and people with disabilities, there are general and national ADA standards that need to be adhered to during renovations. Always consult with local standards to stay within ADA compliance, as these requirements can vary across states. Then you can select the right bathroom features and accessories so your ADA bathroom design will provide both functionality and comfort to all of your guests throughout their hotel stay.
